Do whatever is legit to get back a positive credit rating.
In two years time when you start holidaying in the south of France/Bondi/Bali/wherever, those little credit cards will give you the freedom you want.
They are becoming more important each year-don't worry about the bricks and mortar (I agree, better half would emasculate me?), but a card is a must.
