CP----There are many families crusing the oceans in perfect comfort and safety. Given that the father has many years of experience and that the child grew up on that very yacht; I doubt that things were as dire as you make them out to be. A childhood friend circumnavigated the world with his wife and two boys (ages 3 & 5) over a period of ~ 4 yrs. while living aboard his yacht of 34ft.
Myself, I have over 40yrs. of experience of blue water crusing and obviously just have a different outlook on life and acceptable risk.
Anyway..... sorry my attempt at humour failed.
