Tony Haggarty, Managing Director of Whitehaven Coal, said he was unaware of any takeover
proposals from the companys largest stakeholder First Reserve. Media reports speculated that the
United States-based First Reserve was in talks with US miner Alpha Resources regarding a
possible $3 billion bid for Whitehaven. Mr Haggarty said that although there had been preliminary
discussions with a number of parties, no formal sales process was in place. Media Monitors 2010
