Trading bots. It's out of control. I have seen trades of just 1 share on my orders, and on two occasions have been left with a trade consisting of more commission than share value. One time I was actually owing money on a sale order at close of trade, after a trade that amounted to less than the commission. That order was eventually filled, although only many days later, when the SP finally swung back up to my asking price.
IMO this sort of frivolous trading shouldn't be allowed. Back in the days before electronic trading, the term 'minimum marketable parcel', meant something quite different to what it does today. It referred to the minimum parcel size of shares that could be traded, whereby shares could only be traded in multiples of that number of shares. This wasn't actually such a good system as it inevitably led to 'odd-lots', which were the remainder amounts of shares held. There were odd-lot traders who specialised in purchasing odd-lots and aggregating them for resale as marketable parcels.
Now-days we could simply have a minimum transaction value that kept things sensible. This simple measure would largely thwart the bots and the price manipulation that seems to occur with low liquidity stocks.
A more sophisticated system should now also be possible, that matches serious orders only with other serious orders, at least up until a certain minimum amount, or fraction of the order, has been filled. The bots would then be left to trade mostly among themselves.
