NRC sets cutoff for GE feedback

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has set an Aug. 31 deadline for comments on the uranium enrichment operation proposed for construction at GE’s Castle Hayne facilities.

The NRC is seeking public comment on the environmental impact statement for the planned laser uranium enrichment facility that was the subject of a May environmental hearing the agency conducted at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

The agency said the extension of the comment period to Aug. 31 from June 8 was made to allow comments on GE’s completed license application, which was filed with the commission in late June.

Now that the filing is complete, the NRC is conducting a 30-day acceptance review, the agency said in a posting in Friday’s Federal Register.

The commission’s acceptance of the application will begin a review of the proposal that the NRC expects to complete in 30 months.

The facility is planned by Global Laser Enrichment – a business venture of nuclear power plant builders GE and Hitachi, and uranium miner Cameco. The venture is on schedule to complete the enrichment test loop at Castle Hayne this summer.

The test loop is designed to confirm the commercial feasibility of the technology and advance the design of the equipment, facility and processes for the planned production facility.
