There is very little about the points you make I disagree with. Its probably just the angle of view that is a little different.
"The issue of compensation is at the forefront of the debate because a good few of the stolen generation have seized the moment...."
Rudd always maintained that there would be no compensation.
This was a known fact when the indigenous folk entered into talks for the consultation of how it were to be worded and carried out.
Now either they disagree with Rudd's proposal and walk away or accept the terms on which it is offered.
From an historical point of view this whole process has been carried out ar se about.
As a nation we have been paying compensation for years (saying sorry by deed) in many forms. Only now are we making it formal, official and verbal.
Howard's offer was more like a proposal to build a bridge. You start on your side of the river and we'll start on ours. Let's meet half way.
It makes perfect sense to me this view of Howard. Many indigenous people have expressed their ideals to be separate from main stream Australia and wish for having their own nation. This is hardly a harmonious proposal (bordering on racist) and as such should not be facilitated by entertaining the demands that are placed on the commonwealth which should not be feeding separatist style thoughts.
