South African Municipality Picks DigiCore Fleet Management Solution to Reduce Vehicle Theft and Abuse
The efficiency and reliability of DigiCore’s vehicle tracking and fleet management system was experienced firsthand recently by officials in eThewini Municipality, a metropolitan region in South Africa. The municipality used DigiCore’s solution to recover 12 stolen vehicles and well as reduce vehicle abuse.

Until deploying DigiCore’s solution, eThekwini Municipality struggled to maintain its fleet of vehicles, worth R1.2 billion. Reckless driving and abuse was significantly shortening the lifespan of these vehicles. The municipality decided to invest R35 million in the satellite-monitoring system, and now can keep track of vehicle thefts and hijackings as well as unauthorized use.

“Due to the fact that the C-track system tracks speed, harsh breaking, excess idling, battery tampering and other infringements, we could manage our fleet more effectively and ensure we have more driver control, monitoring and correction,” said eThekwini municipal manager Michael Sutcliffe, in a statement.

Further, “no-go zones” such as shopping malls are programmed into the system to make sure that drivers do not waste resources by traveling to these places.

“The new system will result in vehicles being used more effectively and serviced more timely, with the emphasis on management functionality,” Sutcliffe said.

Also, the system provides details about accidents on a second-by-second basis. The data includes the speed of the vehicles before and at the point of impact. This information can be produced in court during legal cases and internal disciplinary hearings.
