Actually another connection between SA and NSW with an extra connection to Vic is nearing completion. The SA component was completed late last year. Project Energy Connect, which should result in less curtailment of non-scheduled generation.
South Australia has brought the target forward because they look like being ahead of schedule to reach the previous target.
At the same time an old style gas powered kettle generator is being subsidised by Government to ensure it's maintained and keeps operating in the market past the time it would otherwise close due to losing money, (it can't respond as quickly as modern gas plant so effectively pays to keep operating when prices are negative).
If the Coalition get their wish and the ban on nuclear is eventually overturned it's likely that nuclear would need a similar subsidy to supply power should Australia reach net zero by our target of 2050 or whatever it is these days.
