Alternatively they could look to the rivers that flood regularly and think about some mitigation schemes to stop the towns getting flushed away.
Rob, no wish to start a scrap with someone who is clearly open to discussion, but I live in the tropics and defy you to find an east flowing river that floods for more tham a few days every few years. When not in flood, the rivers tend to trickle and what water there is the locals call theirs. The Bradfield scheme should be cremated and buried.
It may be Bradfield Mk II but Hell's Gate Dam is the only viable option but I doubt Bradfield knew of it nor was thinking of the Burdekin. I suspect he was looking at the Herbert, Tully and such.
Hell's Gate SHOULD be Snowy II.
