    Realistically, the world probably needs a mix of all three things: cleaner coal/gas, nuclear and renewables. It goes against my grain a bit to say that, but renewables alone are far too small-scale, far too expensive, and still not technologically advanced enough to do it alone.

    Gas and coal won't be phased out any time soon, for practical reasons ( and much political lobbying by the large energy players), so we're stuck with that, like it or not.

    Countries such as the USA, China and India just absolutely need nuclear power to feed their energy needs. I don't personally like it, but nothing else has the capacity to meet demand without totally suffocating the planet.

    I don't think Australia needs nuclear power. I'm told it would take decades to set up anyway. The cynic in me tends to suspect that what Mr Weatherill really means is "I was previously against nuclear energy but the uranium lobby has, er, "persuaded" me otherwise."
