Something those who have followed the S.A. Voice election closely might be able to tell me this:
What was the criterion for being an eligible voter?
There's nothing I can see specifically in the Voice Election Rules :
S.A. 2024 Voice Election Rulesother than I gather:
* the voter should be on the South Australian electoral roll (though a provision in the rules seems to allow some flexibility on that score)
and:
* the electoral officer shall ask any person presenting to cast a vote "Are you a First-Nations person?" - or words to that effect.
So was that it? If I was a South Ozzian, and I walked up to a polling place and answered 'Yes', I would've had a vote?
On what basis could an electoral officer request proof, or more information?
What if I said: "My ancestry of one of my parents' utterly unknown"? (That's entirely true, BTW).
What if I said: "I identify as a First Nations person"?
Can we all be First Nations persons now?
If not, why not?
