We spend a lot of time focussed on the Russian/ Ukraine war. However much closer to home is the emerging troubles in the South China Sea, particularly the build up of Philippines and Chinese skirmishes in the last month or so. This is potentially a trigger for another conflict but on our own doorstep. Remember how Australia got involved in the war in Europe last time only to end up short in our own part of the world. We need to focus clearly on potential conflict in our region and not get caught with our pants down again like the last time. Is the testing of the Phillipines resolve in the South China Sea by China an effort to see if there is potential for their territorial expansion in the Asian and Pacific region ? Take a look at what actions the Phillipines are taking towards China with their preparations for a potential conflict over areas that are very close to their borders and under threat from Chinese territorial claims.

In the South China Sea, China is just doing the right things to protect their vital shipping lanes. Nothing more. All the local stakeholders, plus the US, know that.
