A Spud (in Scots / Gaelic) is a small digging tool, used to dig up Tatties (potatos), weeds, whatever..............It was more chisel-like shape, so built like a drill bit I guess. Speculating, but thats probably where the word Spade came from as well - flatter version.
Testament to all the Scottish Engineers and Drillers out there!! = First digging of a drill hole.
