The Ultimate Goal Is to Develop Neuromorphic Chips

The Korean government plans to invest 1 trillion won on AI-related technologies in the next 10 years.

It will not be Homo sapiens alone that will determine what their future will be like. Artificial intelligence will have a fair share of influence on shaping the future for Homo sapiens as well.

That is the belief held by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), which says artificial intelligence will have the greatest impact on all industries that the world has ever witnessed in the history of industrial revolutions.

    S. Korea, US, China, Taiwan embroiled in fierce competition to dominate AI semiconductors

South Korea, the US, China, and Taiwan are in fierce competition for dominance in source technology for the AI-related semiconductor market. All four of these countries appear to be bringing their full technological capabilities to bear on the infant industry, which still lacks a dominant player. Not only traditional semiconductor manufacturers but also startups and non-semiconductor companies such as Google and Tesla have jumped into the fray.

On Oct. 12, South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun presided over a meeting of government ministers related to the field of technology at the system semiconductor design support center at the second Pangyo Techno Valley in Gyeonggi Province. At the meeting, the government unveiled its strategy for developing the AI semiconductor industry, with the goal of maintaining Korea’s status as a semiconductor powerhouse in the emerging field of AI semiconductors.

The government’s strategy consists of four main objectives: developing AI semiconductors into the next DRAM semiconductor by 2030; controlling a 20% share of the global market for AI semiconductors by 2030; developing 20 innovative AI semiconductor firms and training 3,000 highly talented workers; and seeking to create a technological “super gap” through an innovative processor-in-memory semiconductor based on Korea’s world-class capabilities in memory semiconductors.

Samsung’s system chip head says M&As needed for non-memory goal

Top memory chip provider announces plan to solely develop NPUs, neuromorphic processors to realize on-device AI

Kang In-yup, president of the system LSI business of Samsung’s device solutions division, emphasized that Samsung “is open to M&As,” after announcing his unit’s plan to accelerate the development and commercialization of neural processing units and NPU-equipped end-to-end solutions to help realize on-device artificial intelligence.

“It’s impossible to expect organic growth to become the top player in this field,” Kang said. “We will consider both small and big M&As to secure talent.”

Failure diagnosis method for power train components

Current Assignee: Hyundai Motor Co Kia Motors Corp

    Abstract

A failure diagnosis method for power train components may include: establishing, by a server, a diagnosis model based on vibration big data indicative of failure of power train components; classifying and modeling, by the server, failed components among the power train components by using feature vectors extracted from the vibration big data; initiating, by a controller of a vehicle, failure diagnosis on power train components of the vehicle by an input command or setting of a driver; and diagnosing, by the controller of the vehicle, a failure of the power train components of the vehicle by comparing a feature vector corresponding to the power train vibration of the vehicle measured during the vehicle travels with the vibration big data modeled in the diagnosis model.

Samsung, Hyundai seeking accessible ways to develop relations

"It remains to be seen whether or not Hyundai will use Samsung's automotive application processors because if it does, then Samsung would learn core factors of Hyundai's future electric vehicle roadmap. I believe the prerequisite about an expansion of ties between Samsung and Hyundai, is Samsung's commitment that it will not make its own vehicles," the executive said by telephone.

Samsung is the global leader in DRAM and flash-type memory chips, but is chasing Taiwan's TSMC and other custom design chip makers. Some analysts expect Samsung will acquire companies related to automotive and bio-health technologies.
