The difference between Telstra and just about every other business in Australia is that much of what they do lends itself to being a monopoly. In the same way the NBN will also be a monopoly. That is the nature of heavily capital intensive businesses. Inevitably, monopolists carry baggage with them - the political "rent" if you will - manifest as the general service obligation. This is the root of all the image problems that telstra has - going right back to the PMG days.
As for being thieves - much of their pricing for fixed line services is below the rate agreed by the ACCC - that's life when fixed line is in decline. Check your facts before making such silly statements.
