I don't know if a FP degree is essential if they have to do further accreditation specific to financial planning. I am unaware of a degree course that would specifically tailor itself to being a financial planner. Management, Accounting, Economics etc would all be useful but not specific. I know of plenty of people with Zoology degrees that have made a great career in finance.
