In a joint statement, the companies said UGL would supply 15 new 5020-class, C44ACHi diesel electric locomotives, worth $93, and 160 stainless-steel bottom-dump wagons, worth $34m, to QR National Coal for its haulage expansion in the Hunter Valley.
"The new-generation locomotives are based on the 5000-class locos operating in the Hunter Valley but with new technologies and increased power," QR's coal executive general manger, Marcus McAuliffe, said.
Work has already begun on the projects with delivery of the first locomotives in December and May 2011 and the freight wagons from April to support QR contracts with Peabody Energy and Felix Resources.
QR's rolling stock and component services arm will build another 80 wagons, worth $18m, for the Peabody contract
