Another report from the Northern Beaches Advocate (28/1/23) - this time about SLS NSW being alerted in real time by activation of the Emergency Response Beacon (ERB) at Shelly Beach in Manly Cove to the mauling of a dolphin by a shark on Saturday 21/1/23.
"Just after 7.00am this morning (Saturday, 21 January), divers at Shelly Beach alerted marine rescue group ORRCA that a dolphin had been mauled by sharks and was close to shore. People on the beach also saw the dolphin being attacked by sharks and pressed the Emergency Response Beacon, calling Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) for assistance."

Although the dolphin died soon after being rescued, the timely alert from the ERB enabled SLS NSW to contact all relevant agencies and to promptly close down Shelly Beach and adjacent beaches until it could determine that the relevant beaches were safe for swimming again.
