The Biden administration is looking to take steps to clean up the significant amount of debris left after years of space exploration. Earth’s orbit has become littered with defunct satellites and rocket bodies, with collisions of pieces of debris creating more junk. While no astronauts have been hit by space junk, the International Space Station has, most recently in December after the launch of a Russian anti-satellite missile created a debris cloud. US Space Command is tracking more than 40,000 objects in space but only 5,000 are active satellites
