I think this what happens when a leader becomes stale(i.e. John Howard). John Howard would not allow someone to take over from him. He believed he could be re-elected on his achievements. He was wrong. New voters did not care what he achieved in the past. IMO his wife was behind not letting him stand down, and I will go to my grave believing that.

I think that any PM has to be in touch with the Australian people and voters. Peoples beliefs and wants change. The current Government must roll with the punches, and counter punch. Time will tell, and 2014 will be interesting times.
