"It is quite possible that in order to reduce the amount of CO² emissions arising from the generation of electricity, the world may turn more and more to nuclear energy as a much cleaner energy alternative. "

Calling SMR's clean is a bit of a stretch. Firstly as soon as uranium ore is dug out of the ground it begins to react with oxygen and creates radiation. Medical science tells us that there is no safe level of radiation and because it occurs naturally in a lot of mined ore, ends up in concrete and road base , therefore increasing human and other animal exposure to increased levels. When uranium ore is mined, typically less than half of the radioactivity is extracted leaving behind huge quantities of radioactive sands that have half lives of tens of thousands of years, usually buried shallowly to be forgotten about in a hundred years.
Secondly, the idea of small modular systems increases the risk of accidents enormously because there are so many of them as well as the potential of accidents via transportation.
Lastly the problem of safe storage of nuclear waste still has not been solved.

Post Three mile island, Chenobyl and Fukushima, more nuclear waste accidents at mine sites too numerous to be documented, the world has little appetite for nuclear energy especially when cheaper and cleaner alternatives are available.
