I have been heavily involved in successfully making the leaseholder of a disused uranium mine clean up the radioactive mess left behind from mining operations which ceased in 1984, but have been left neglected.
Not only was due care not taken by the original miners, there was systematic lack of action taken by the government regulators for 35 years.
Radio active material thousands of times over the limits imposed by the environmental authority were breached consistently. The location of the mine is in close proximity (50Km) from a small city with the pollution running into creeks that feed Queenslands largest river.
Despite claims to the contrary uranium mining is not safe.
