You really seem to be really over thinking it and totally seduced by the "special stones". It is coming across like a ruby version of gold fever.
It seems abundantly clear to me MUS were told to learn their place and they did not have a weight to throw around to take over the global colored (or at least red colored) gem trade to be a De Beers style vertical integration outfit.
But, the other layers in the existing market structure still want supply, they just don't want competition on their layers they have worked very hard to establsh.
If all goes to plan the company will do just fine without the special stones, don't sweat it.
