it seems as though the rumour that bhp made a friendly offer of $110 that rio rejected was obviously false given rio's statement to the mkt after the asx close.
so will all today's gains get wiped out on the asx tommorrow?
doesn't look like it, despite rio's comments it opened up over 6% in the UK and as i write is holding these gains, so basically mirroring the gains seen on the asx today.
my guess is that bhp are working on a bid for rio in the near future but are yet to approach rio, and that these things are hard to keep quiet so it has somehow got out to the mkt, but the specific rumour of a 110 friendly offer was probably a case of chinese whispers.
but looking at uk trading right now i wouldn't be so sure rio drops tommorrow.
