The after effects of the derailment have meant many east-west freight trains have run late, but in the last day or two that has improved, thankfully.
Sydney to Perth and vice versa freights have been up to 110 vehicles (wagons), and thus 1800 metres in length, as it's the pre-Christmas peak with supermarkets especially needing stock across in Perth and the rest of Western Australia. These continue to travel via Goulburn, Albury, Tootenham Junction in Melbourne's inner west, North Shore near Geelong, Ararat and Adelaide rather than the still flooded Broken Hill normal route.
Melbourne to Perth intermodal trains are more frequent (mostly two per day, some days such as Thursday more) so are typically shorter at 60 (rare) to 85 wagons but are also very busy.
LAU railable containers feature on both.
