I am overseas but Melbourne to Perth intermodals can divert via Benalla, Albury, Wagga Wagga, Cootamundra West, Goobang Junction near Parkes and Broken Hill if rail operator Pacific National agrees, joining the Adealaide to Perth and Darwin line at Coonamia near Port Pirie, South Australia.

This takes many more hours but the LAU containers will still arrive in Perth. It adversely affects transit times and productivity so is not ideal but it is not like UK or Europe where often there are alternative routes trains can use within a few kilometres.

An alternative may be to road to Adelaide then place on rail wagons but this is expensive and there is the much discussed truck driver shortage.

Not great that this has occurred in the busy pre Christmas period.
