Nonsense, Mahathir will ALWAYS put Malaysia's best interests way ahead of rhetoric, and he clearly summed it back in 2012:

"Kuala Lumpur, Dec 18: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed has agreed with the government decision to continue with the Lynas rare earth processing plant in Gebeng, Kuantan and disagreed with protesters that the plant was dangerous.

Condemning the action of protesters over the heavily politicised rare earth plant in Kuantan, he said the nation needed to accept that it was unharmful, and important for the country to reap the benefits from the existence of rare earth in the country."

"He said that the process undertaken at the Lynas plant was not a dangerous process and its safety had been assured by the world’s best expert and certified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."

Now contrast those comments of Mahathir almost exactly six years ago with that of one of his very close confidants a week ago, who also happens to be a chemical engineer:

"PETALING JAYA: A PPBM Supreme Council member has urged the government to judge Lynas Malaysia based on merit, not “political hysteria”."

"He noted that Lynas had a six-year track record of safe operations supported by audit reports from both government regulators such as the Department of Environment (DoE) and Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB), as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency and the review committee commissioned by the new government."

"He said the Cabinet must stand above political hysteria and residual bias as Malaysia’s reputation as a high-end industrial and technological investment destination was at stake, in addition to the livelihoods of Lynas’ employees, suppliers and their families."
