I cannot afford a Tesla at this time but will be looking at one at some stage as I am with you in regards to them.
I occasionally get to drive a friends Model "S" and the first time I drove it I dam near S$$t myself when I went to take off. I forgot that it is direct drive with no latency or drag. Just about ended up at the chiropractor after, but I loved it and all they have to offer and the technology inside one of these is fantastic and is very quiet with the feeling of being cared for with the safety features.
The S means speed and man it does it fast!
