Here is 2023 Japanese research into extracting REE from hot springs water, and from "artificial" seawater. The conclusion is that the test can't be done yet with real seawater, because it has too much salt in it. That might not be a problem with waste from a desalination plant. In any case, less basic chemistry knowledge and more basic biology knowledge may be helpful in the next five years, to determine whether yeast can be used for new "mining" processes.
