I normally pay 1-2 days before the closing date. That way you can see how the share price is going and whether there has been any +ve or -ve news come out during the SPP period that may affect your decision to buy or not. Of all the SPP ive been involved in i would say that over 50% of them have had good news released during the SPP period which helps boost shareholder confidence in taking up the offer.
I normally pay via BPAY which gives you the freedom to pay at the last minute.
I havent been involved in any SPP that have closed early but i suspect they should inform all shareholders that they are going to do that if they do decide to close early.
