If current holders don’t participate - they allow the underwriter to do whatever they choose with their allocated shares - potentially on selling them to hedge funds to further short the company from 55c.
Whilst it’s may appear tempting to buy on market at a slightly lower price (that is by design - see above) non participation also dilutes your existing shares.
They are your shares - don’t surrender control of your investment…
So, when you say it makes no financial sense - it is quite the opposite.
