Project Description: Current operations by military forces in urban terrain require the use of separate weapons for a variety of applications, specifically, in addition to the current assault weapon of choice, a second weapon, primarily a shotgun. This is required for applications such as door breeching or as a non-lethal projectile delivery system for crowd control applications. By combining the two components in a single lightweight system, manpower requirements can be reduced and the combatant has the ability to engage in multiple actions heretofore unavailable with his single individual combat weapon. The Office of Naval Research has funded a R&D program to develop a 12 gauge underbarrel launcher using the Metal Storm stacked round, electronically initiated technology. The ability to combine the primary assault weapon with a lightweight 12 gauge accessory weapon for use in non lethal application of force as well as door breeching scenarios will allow for a single combatant to utilize the capabilities previously required by either two separate weapons, or two combatants.
