Does anyone dispute the idea that oil and other natural resources are finite?
Apart from the above fact burning fossil fuels releases pollution into the atmosphere regardless of the debate on AGW the fact that fossil fuels are a finite resources and the pollution it releases are all the reasons we need to develop renewable energy sources.
Wind and solar have limitations but they have reduces the use of fossil fuels, one example is Albany WA that has wind farm produce 80% of their electricity.
One technology that I think gas the greatest potential is bio-hydrogen, it is created from waste organic material using sunlight. Small scale production has been achived so the next challenge is production on a large scale and as far as using it in cars goes there is the issue of setting up the infrastructure for deliver and distribution.
