sprint ends year with record 53.9 mln subscrib

    NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Sprint Corp. S +5.85% said Tuesday its fourth-quarter net loss narrowed to $1.04 billion, or 26 cents a share, from a year-earlier loss of $1.32 billion, or 44 cents a share. Operating loss narrowed to $576 million from $738 million, the communications company said. Net operating revenues rose to $9.14 billion from $9.01 billion in the year-ago period. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected a per-share loss of 35 cents on revenue of $8.98 billion. Sprint said it added 58,000 postpaid subscribers, 322,000 prepaid subscribers and 302,000 wholesale and affiliate subscribers in the period, ending the year with a record 53.9 million platform subscribers. Sprint said it sold 5.6 million smartphones in the quarter. The company said it expects 2014 adjusted EBITDA of $6.5 billion to $6.7 billion and capital expenditures of about $8 billion. Shares rose 6.4% in premarket trade.
