i can see what he's trying to say, over the years I've seen some very very cherry picked rock chips that were questionable on the relationship or representation between that rock chip and the area. Copper and gold comes to mind, not lithium (spod).
that said, you can spot spod pretty easily, or at least it seems so. Look at GREs 'mauve spod' or the long crystals and bladed spod in others like Azure. If you cracked a peg open and saw that, you'd put it in the bag...some companies do visuals others don't until assays.
P-XRF handhelds do detect trace elements from which a K/Rb ratio can be determined but no substitute for the lab. Not many companies report this, I'm not sold on it.
so in the end it's the assays as usual, and hope that the bagged chips at least looked like they had spod in em lol.
