Apr 24, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has decided to make arrangements to re-open a large number of hospitals that are currently closed due to lack of staff and facilities.

Addressing a public gathering, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has said the Health Ministry plans to re-open 97 government hospitals that are being closed now.

The government says 80 hospitals in the North and East had to cease operations due to terrorist threats during the armed conflict. The remaining hospitals are in Hambantota and Kandy Districts.

The Minister says the Ministry plans to deploy the staff, including doctors and nurses for these hospitals and provide other necessary resources to serve the public.

The Minister said that future appointment of doctors, nurses and other health staff will be made to these Hospitals.
