It's not stupidity so much as a tendency to judge on a relative rather than an absolute basis. The average unemployed person in 1975 was incredibly well off.....compared to the average person in the year 1000. Yet the unemployed person in 1975 still considered themselves poor, because the measure humans use is to those around them not an absolute measure on an historical basis.
