Meanwhile, cleaners at Westmead Hospital are refusing to enter its COVID ward, claiming they have been denied access to personal protective equipment. The Health Services Union said the workers had not been given properly fitting masks and were told they would not be able to shower at the hospital before returning home. Staff are concerned this will heighten the risk of spreading the virus to their families at home and to the wider community. A spokesperson for Westmead Hospital said it was working to address staff concerns and ensure they had access to appropriate PPE. The hospital said strict infection control guidelines were in place to keep staff and patients safe.
