The yanks feared socialism long before 1945,jeff. In the 19thCentury the chief fear was of Anarchism.Even up to at least the 1970's a Question for US visas was Are You or have you ever been a member of an anarchist organisation.I think it was even this clause that got John Lennon deported in the early 70's.Anarchists of course "protest" etc under the Black Flags that one sees along with the Red[Commies] ones at Demos. As you probably know-Every Communist is a Socialist BUT not every Socialist is a Communist. ie Socialist is a catch all phrase while Communist is a particular branch.
I just wanted,on a Sunday,to perhaps tweak your interest in Social Movements that precursed last century's "innovations".Check out the Luddites and/or Sabot-ageurs. cheers.
