It could also be argued that democracy has yet to arrive in America. Close scrutiny of the American version of democracy has huge gaps in it from the choosing of candidates to the low turnout and method of voting. Those with large amounts of money seem to have control of the country rather than the individual voter. It may work OK at certain times, but it can collapse dramatically as at present.
