Telstra is gearing up to launch direct-to-smartphone text messaging via Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites in the coming months. This move is set to expand mobile coverage in remote areas, allowing users to send SMS messages without needing additional hardware.
The technology, known as Satellite-to-Mobile (STM) or Direct to Handset (DTH), will initially support basic text messaging, with future plans to introduce voice and data services. Telstra has already conducted live trials, sending over 55,000 text messages using this satellite capability.
This development places Telstra in direct competition with Optus and Vodafone owner TPG, both of whom are also exploring satellite-based mobile solutions. TPG recently achieved a milestone by sending its first direct-to-smartphone text message via LEO satellites, while Optus has faced delays due to regulatory and technical challenges.
