It wouldn't surprise me that you could spend a $1mil on a single worldwide patent application. It depends on how many countries you file into, how many searches the patent attorney does & how many problems you run into. There's also the recent trend of countries forcing inventors to separate out every little invention into its own application which makes a bucket load of money for the patent attorneys & patent offices and drains the pockets of inventors.
