Where I work there is a bit of a divisive cultural between management and the general workforce . There is no doubt that a lot of the management look down on the workforce and that attitude is somewhat secretly cultivated . They seem to think that there's something wrong with you if you don't want to climb the ladder . They don't seem to understand that even though the workforce doesn't want to move into management , that doesn't mean that they're not aspirational or interested in advancement . Management just don't understand the workforce and are not willing to attempt to .
I have seen many people who are very skilled , very smart and/or great leaders passed over by management because they didn't fit the mould . Instead , the yes men get promoted .
A tremendous waste of resources I would say .
Management is all about the short term , career focus etc etc . They don't seem to get that some people are happy to stay in the one position and do it well .
That said , my mates that have small business don't expect their employees to have their drive or sense of ownership . They are just consistently disappointed by the low standard of many of these people . Taking heaps of sickies , not doing work to the standard instructed - that sort of thing .

I liken the corporate world to the tv show Survivor. You need to be cunning, calculating, manipulative, and able to form alliances, and a willingness to heap praise on other staff including those above you because everyone to a man wants to hear how great they are, even if it's bullshit and they know it's not true, it still reflects better on you.
