When Damo went public about this event a few months ago, Cougar responded that they had found similar "background" levels of the same chemical in baseline groundwater quality testing undertaken prior tothe trial ucg burn on Cougar's property ... the Govt therefore has little choice but to down play the event ... and Damo has been quiet as a field mouse since.
The same baseline testing didn't detect BTEX prior to the burn and this in itself is not conclusive that it doesn't exist as trace, transient readings from farming practices. Remember, 1-2 ppb is close to the limit of laboratory detection. However, it might be argued that the absence of BTEX in pre-burn groundwater monitoring gave the Qld Govt and DERM opportune opportunity to skewer Cougar.
