They weren't elected to stop the boats by any means. Most Australians still expect their government to act with decency, transparency, and in accord with international law and conventions. On these measures they failed miserably.

All of which is one reason why Abbott was the most unpopular PM in Australian history (Yes- that's right. Even Gillard and Rudd were more popular at their lowest).

Just watch - Turnbull will wind back the approach and restore some decency. Thankfully. Give it 6 months and there will be no more children in detention, or secrecy under the guise of "operational matters".
