Abbott cares about the Party, Turnbull cares about Turnbull.
A split now would be a disaster. Turnbull is in big trouble in the polls with an election-losing 4% deficit. His supporters have no idea how he can turn it around and it looks terminal. Why leave the party only to come back after the leadership change?
