I don't believe the car manufacturers were 'hosed' in the sense of having their chip orders accepted and produced and then on-sold to someone else. I believe the challenge for the car manufacturer's was getting the chip suppliers to accept an order in the first place. Two very different situations, with different implications on the competency of their supply chain abilities and relationships.
