Is People Telecom the old Swiftel? Think it might be.
Anyway, don't feel too bad, I recently had to sit waiting on hold for TWO HOURS with Telstra, before blowing my stack and ripping the phone out of the wall. OK, I really just hung up, but I went round to the Telatra shop instead and the problem was fixed in a few minutes.
