Perhaps it helps to understand that your facts hinge on your perspectives?
I am not sure if you can? It would be a pity if you cannot, for a lot of the richness in Smith's account, is thus so lost.
Jay Smith is overtly a deeply Christian man and can't seem to contain his 'gotcha' type of joy at seeking to TRUMP (excuse the term) islam. It is a one-upmanship that diminishes him, and tests his scholarship. Belief is belief, and no amount of rationalism, will change the dogmatic, dog headed belief of believer.
In a way he is reminiscent of the Catholic Biblical scholar Father de Vaux who could not, despite being an astounding world authority, contain his Catholicism in the translation of the Dead Sea scrolls! And in the process stuffed it up...
But if you can pigeonhole that, as Smith's limitation. If....
Then the historicity of what Dr. Jay Smith lectures is impeccable, and I believe is to be the faultless, current understanding of the historical record of islam. And the obvious glaring factual holes and contradictions that exist in islam, that only a muslim would accept in the mindlessness that is common in all religion, and to all believers.
Yet for me, (someone who accepts neither the theology of Judaism, Christianity nor islam, nor any other theology as my purpose or teleology,) then Smith is an incredible historian. For his summation fits in with the moulding of the Christian faith, and how it was being, and had been moulding, prior to islams explosion.
islam is by an large, a particularly strong Christian doctrine that existed in Egypt from about 200-550 AD. Arianism, and it's main tenet was the Shahadah. (Sortuv) A type of Christianity that strongly eschewed the trinity! Because of this 'blasphemy' it survived, tenuously, at the fringes of Byzantium (Eastern Roman Christian Middle Eastern Catholicism of the Maronites, Greek Orthodox, Egyptian Copts) power and thought... until!!! Until.... the Byzantium Empire stuffed up, (plague mainly) at which point the Desert Armies took control over what was the skeleton of ancient Rome. The absurdity of the existent koran is that Mecca is mention once vaguely, mohammed only four times, whereas Moses is mentioned 114 times!
Bizarre!
If you can't stomach Dr. Smith try reading Tom Holland's account.
He is a delightful historian.
