As I said recently, I believe the time has passed for BCE(black coal equivalent) as far as power generation is concerned. DICE remains a glimmer of hope but it's slow progress and lack of funding make it likely to miss that boat. Exergen look to be moving in another direction and the csiro look more focussed on their own mrc tech(based on black coal)
Gasification and coal to liquids look like being biggest future tech's for brown coal. Hydrogen from brown coal could be good for Mantle if it develops quickly.
Another breakthrough is Kobe Steel with Midrex using low rank coal in its DRI process. They have been kicking goals in areas not usually able to use lignite as part of their steel industry. This could be another potential "new" tech for Mantle's LV coal.
It's taken a few years to get going but is now at commercial roll out stage with commercial scale plants up and running.
